Goal Two: The Essential Nature of Information

Outcome 2b

Explain the impact of information policies on intellectual freedom, access, literacy, information behavior, and other aspects of library and information science.

In LIS 748 we explored the impact of information and collection policies on access and intellectual freedom through reviewing two collection policies from real school libraries across the country. I chose a combined elementary and middle school in Wisconsin, as well as the Chicago public school system in Illinois. Through this analysis, I was able to learn how two school systems in two different states informed their selections. While both were well done, one clearly favored DEI more than the other, which in turn influenced their collection to be more inclusive than the other school–showing a direct impact between policies and access. Further questions of intellectual freedom and information behavior were explored, and it all culminated into a deeper understanding of how vital collection policies are, as they truly drive the entire tone of how your library operates.
