Outcome 1c
Participate in professional activities and associations, such as professional conferences and meetings, internships and practicums, and professional email discussions and social media.
My favorite professional tools are ones that are, perhaps, not the most popular, but I find to be very useful for both purchasing and seminars. Library journals! From Kirkus to Library Journal, School Library Journal, and Booklist, I find them to be ideal tools for getting a feel on what patrons find popular, as well as any of the buzz happening within the industry. Moreover, I have watched several free seminars on Booklist that have helped me develop knowledge about types of materials that I have no history in, such as Graphic Novels, which are a part of my selectors area. Furthermore, attending conferences such as Reaching Forward have helped me not only develop my PLN, but have given me endless ideas about programming, and how to best serve my patrons. For example, please see attached a video of Ricky–an amazing two-toed sloth that I am in the process of hiring for teens during the stress of finals, as a part of a larger “relaxation” program to help them de-stress.
