Goal One: Philosophy

Outcome 1a

Describe the evolving nature of the core values and ethics within diverse information environments.

In LIS 703 I chose to write about the history of security and libraries for my final paper. Particularity, how libraries have evolved over time to be places of trust, confidentiality, and discretion. To me, this is one of the absolute core values of being a librarian. If your patrons cannot trust you to find information for them, no matter how private or scary the information may be , then what are you there for? If you cannot provide authoritative materials on a very wide range of subjects that may even be embarrassing for some patrons, quietly and respectfully, then you are not a librarian. This core value in particular has been evolving since ancient times, and still does to this day. In fact, it plays a pivotal role in our ethical makeup. Whether you are a school librarian, academic librarian, public librarian, or even a special collection or archival librarian–this code of ethics evolves with each one to be vitally important. Therefore, I believe that is paper is a great example of the evolving nature of our core values and ethics as information professionals.
