Goal Five: Advocacy

Outcome 5a

Apply marketing and/or advocacy principles to demonstrate and promote the value of libraries and information agencies.

Public libraries are known to be places of pure awesomeness in the summertime when it comes to youth. There are activity days, where bounce castles, food trucks, character actors, and arcade games are brought in for families and kids to enjoy! But the summer reading programs are what takes the cake. From extensive and engaging reading lists, to prizes and activities to boot–summer time is awesome! But what about during the school year? In LIS 721, I created a readers advisory list for children of books with cats! For this project, I created two types of marketing materials. A readers advisory flyer, and a “booktalk” to be posted on social media. For these two elements, I utilized marketing principles to promote some very fun books for those aged 9-12. In fact, I have already used some skills that I learned during this assignment, such as how to write a book blurb, and how to speak engagingly about a book, in my current position as a teen librarian. Overall, I believe these two marketing materials encapsulate best practices for promoting the value of libraries and their collections! Please see below my marketing materials!
